Adult Development and Aging

Mental illness is a common, but not normal part of the aging process. As people age, they may be faced with numerous losses and for some, the reactions to these losses may be too much to bear on their own. Symptoms such as sadness, lack of motivation, anxiety and grief that are stronger or last longer than what would be expected in others. Generally, mental illness should be treated as soon as symptoms arise, especially because untreated mental illness can affect the recovery from physical illnesses, which can then exacerbate the mental illness.

At City Psychology, we treat both older adults, as well as members of their family, who may also be experiencing changes related to their spouses’, parents’, and partners’ changes in functioning. Oftentime when an older adult becomes sick, it can have an impact on the entire family system. Through our customized, concierge treatment model, we focus on the unique challenges and needs that older adult clients and their families demand. This ensures the well-being and functioning of everyone involved.
