Couples Therapy

Every couple has periods of time in their relationship when there are disagreements. For couples who find themselves unable to break out of high tension periods, or find they are having challenges with their communication style, or want help in reconnecting with one another, couples therapy can be helpful. Couples Therapy has been shown to be effective across sexual orientation or marital status. At CPC our psychologists are trained in family and couples therapy. They will teach skills that will enhance your communication with each other and help manage disagreements in healthier ways. Common types of issues addressed in couples therapy are:

  • Communication difficulties
  • Trust related issues
  • Sexual difficulties
  • Conflicts around child rearing or blended families
  • Anger issues

Your CPC clinician will begin treatment by taking an in depth history of the relationship and assessing the goals of each individual. The assessment will provide your clinician with a greater understanding of the problem areas in the relationship. Each partner will learn concrete skills to help develop healthier ways of communicating and relating. Assignment will be given between sessions that are targeted at having the couple practice the skills learned in session. The out of session exercises will help the couple to generalize the skills learned during therapy to their real life.

Parent Consultation

For parents that are looking for expert guidance in how to best approach or respond to their child or teen’s problematic behavior or emotional disturbance, CPC psychologists offer parent consultations.

After conducting an in-depth assessment of issues within the home, our psychologists provide support and tools for parents to more effectively manage their responses to their child or teen. You will gain a more thorough understanding of what is behind your child’s emotional or behavioral disturbance, and learn the best ways to respond that will impart lasting change.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based therapy that uses mindfulness and acceptance strategies to help increase a client’s psychological flexibility and develop greater understanding of their values. It has been shown that this type of therapy helps create a more fulfilling life that is based more on the present moment.

Supportive Therapy

Supportive Therapy was designed to help decrease a client’s presenting symptoms or distress levels. In this type of therapy, the therapist develops a warm, engaging and encouraging relationship with the client that seeks to build a client’s self-esteem. Supportive therapy consists of a variety of techniques and interventions that reinforce healthy patterns in a client’s life.

Grief Counseling

Grief Counseling or Bereavement Counseling is designed to help people cope with the loss of a loved one. Grief counseling provides a space for someone to process their feelings about their loss, and develop better strategies to cope with their painful feelings. While it is normal to experience sadness after the loss of a loved one, grief counseling is recommended for people whose grief is interfering with their daily activities or feel unable to move forward in their life.

Exposure and Response Prevention

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a type of therapy designed specifically for people struggling with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This type of behavioral therapy exposes people to situations that trigger their obsessions while preventing them from engaging in their safety behaviors. Eventually with the guidance of your licensed psychologist, your thoughts will no longer be anxiety provoking, and your urges to engage in safety behaviors will decrease.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapeutic treatment that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings and behavior. In this type of therapy, clients will learn how to identify and change their maladaptive thought patterns that may be influencing their behavior in unhealthy ways. Clients9 will learn new and healthier ways of responding to their thoughts and emotions, all within a supportive and warm environment.
